The terrain is bisected by the Great Rift Valley and fertile plateau in the west.

Territorial disputes between the UK and Guatemala delayed the independence of Belize until 1981. With a population of just over 350,000 Belize is located in Central America, bordering the Caribbean Sea, between Guatemala and Mexico. The climate is tropical, very hot and humid and the rainy season is from May to November and the dry season from February to May. The terrain is flat and swampy with low mountains in the south.

The climate varies; equatorial in the south, tropical in the centeral part and arid in north. The terrain consists of southern lowlands which merge into central hills and plateaus; mountains in the southeast and plains in the north
